Our History

Historical images of Moray Seafoods

Our genuine seafood delicacies have been built on an enviable reputation for harvesting and hand selecting only the finest sustainable Scottish Seafood for your personal delectation.

For more than fifty years our strongly independent family business has acted as custodians of the unspoiled waters of the Moray Firth that reach out into the fertile fishing grounds of the North Atlantic. A unique blend of tidal currents mixed with cold and oxygen rich nutrients create a natural reserve for the development of superior seafood species.

Our expertise is not solely bound to the Moray Firth, our proficiency reaches out across all of Scotland and to the Mediterranean where we harvest through our sister company, Moray Fish International, the most revered seafood delicacies.

Our approach is fresh, sustainable, exclusive and independent; our methods are hand crafted by our loyal fishing folk, who are committed to preserving the professional and exacting standards set by our forefathers.

This dedication and preservation enables us to deliver genuine deluxe seafood delicacies to you our discerning friends throughout the world.

Chronology

This site is dedicated to our founder and late father Charles Eckersley OBE.

1950s

Company established in 1958.

1960s

On the back of traditional fresh white fish supplies predominantly in London and Manchester, the business raised its profile through pioneering innovative chilled and frozen scampi produce into food service and wholesalers nationwide.

1970s

The opportunity to travel with greater freedom of movement led to Moray Seafoods pioneering and developing a network of export markets on the Continent and North America. We relationships flew far and wide, BA Concorde and Red Lobster for example.

This legacy is still strong, exports make up for 50% of business trade predominantly into Spain though our sister company Moray Spain, located in the Mediterranean seafood capital of Barcelona. We also continue to export into other European countries, North America and the Middle East.

1980s

Scampi and cold water Prawns became our core business. In this period the business pioneered seafood ready meals into retail and food service. On the back of this expansion, the business diversified into complementary areas such as fishing boats, seafood distribution, food machinery and leisure.

1990s

Second generation steered business away from non-core activity and focused on developing its UK scampi, cold water prawn and premium export business.

Own label sales overtook branded sales in volume and value.

2000s

Volume sales into food service was key growth area.

This legacy accounts for UK Scampi sales being approximately 20% of total food service sales in UK.
